Health Insurance for Students
To study in Germany, you need valid health insurance. Without proof of coverage, you cannot enroll at the university or re-register for the next semester.
Proof of health insurance
Your health insurance is not verified on paper, but digitally. This means that your health insurance provider sends your insurance status directly to the university; the information is no longer sent on paper.
This electronic exchange ensures that your insurance status is always up to date.
Various status messages are used for this purpose, for example:
- whether you are insured (message M10)
- whether there has been a change in insurance (message M11)
- whether there are any outstanding premiums (message M12) and whether they have been paid (message M13)
Important: Unpaid premiums will prevent you from registering for the next semester.
Health Insurance Instructions for Enrollment
As a general rule, all applicants must submit electronic proof of their insurance status from a statutory health insurance provider in Germany upon enrollment. This requirement applies regardless of age, the number of semesters of study, or the type of insurance. This proof is also required if you have international or private insurance.
Only once a valid electronic confirmation is available can you be enrolled or re-register for the next semester. Inform your statutory health insurance provider that you wish to study at Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena.
If you have reached the age of 30, you are generally no longer required to have health insurance while studying. However, you still need electronic proof from a statutory health insurance provider for your enrollment. This confirms to the university that you are no longer required to have insurance as a student. To do this, you must contact a statutory health insurance provider and request the electronic M10 notification for the university. This is usually the health insurance provider with which you were last insured.
Please provide our sender number H00001255 to the health insurance provider for the M10 notification. You can often trigger the notification yourself via your health insurance provider’s app. There may be a delay in the transmission of the notification.
Information for individuals with private health insurance
You can only enroll in private health insurance if you opt out of the mandatory statutory health insurance at the start of your studies. This decision is usually binding for the duration of your studies, and switching back to statutory health insurance later on is often only possible under certain conditions.
If you have private health insurance, you still need an electronic proof of insurance from a statutory health insurance provider for enrollment. This document digitally confirms to the university that you are not covered by statutory insurance (e.g., because you are exempt from insurance or have been exempted from the mandatory insurance requirement).
Important: A certificate from your private health insurance provider or a copy of your insurance card is not sufficient.
Information for International Students
If you are coming from abroad, specific rules apply to your proof of insurance, depending on your country of origin. The key requirement is that your health insurance is verified electronically in Germany.
EU citizens
If you are from an EU country and have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you do not need additional insurance in Germany.
You must present your EHIC to a German statutory health insurance provider. They will then issue an electronic confirmation for the university stating that you are exempt from the insurance requirement (registration code M10).
Countries with social security agreements (e.g., Switzerland, Turkey)
If you have statutory health insurance in your home country, you need a corresponding insurance certificate for coverage abroad. These forms may have different names depending on the country (e.g., E-111, AT 11, ATN11, or BH6). You must submit this document to a German statutory health insurance provider. The provider will then generate the electronic notification (M10) to the university for exemption from the insurance requirement.
Non-EU citizens
When you begin your studies in Germany, you must register with a health insurance provider after entering the country. The health insurance provider will then electronically submit a notification (M10) to the university. This indicates whether you are insured or not.
The health insurance provider will also check whether an exemption from the German insurance requirement is possible and, if applicable, issue you the necessary documentation.
