German Course & Cultural Programme

Before the start of every winter semester, we organise a two-week intensive German language course accompanied by a cultural programme. After a placement test at the beginning of the course, the participants are divided into groups of different levels. The course comprises 50 hours.

Registrations for the next course are open from May 2023.

Intensive German course

The language course consists of the two components: everyday language and study-related language.

The component everyday language contains the following areas:

  • Orientation in the new environment
  • Shopping and ordering (supermarket, restaurant)
  • Attendance and services (consultation, bank, offices)
  • Leisure time and social contacts

The study-related component contains the following areas:

  • Information management
  • Competences of presentation
  • Social competences
  • Autonomy

Participation in the intensive German course is free of charge. The course is conducted by JenDaF e.V. by order of the University of Applied Sciences Jena.

Cultural Programme

The cultural programme will take place on selected afternoons after the German lessons. Participation costs a personal contribution between 30 and 50 euros, depending on the scope of the programme.

Events of Cultural Programme 2022

Time: 15:45

At the beginning of the language course weeks, we welcome all participants of the German course and cultural programme to the International Centre in the house on the wall. The International Centre is a meeting place for German and international students and is home to numerous international organisations and associations.

Time: 18:00

From the International Centre it is only a few steps to the Italian restaurant L'Osteria, where all participants of the cultural programme are invited to a Welcome Dinner from 6 pm. Food and drinks are paid by the International Office.

Time: 15:00

From the meeting point at Ernst Abbe Square, we walk along the "Leutra" stream towards the restaurant "Papiermühle" in Jena West. From there we climb up on a panoramic path to the viewpoint at the "Landgrafen". The total distance of the hike is approx. 5 km. The path can be easily managed with hiking shoes or trainers.

Time: 10:15

In the Plan B boulder hall you climb up boulders without a safety rope. Soft mats ensure that falling down is also fun and that you can't hurt yourself. During the training session, climbing techniques are taught and the first climbing tours are undertaken. Afterwards, everyone can continue climbing for as long as they like.

Important: Bring sports clothes and a towel. Climbing shoes can be borrowed from the bouldering hall. Food and drinks can either be brought along or bought in the boulder hall.

Time: 15:15

Imaginata is a place to experiment and experience science with all your senses. A lot of entertaining and exciting experiments await you in the "Stationenpark". All the objects can be interacted with and there is also a bit of thrill.

Note: Please bring something to eat and drink with you. There is no kiosk at the Imaginata.

Time: 19:15

The Zeiss Planetarium Jena is the longest-serving planetarium in the world, but at the same time has the most modern 360° projection technology on the market. The "Space Tour" combines well-known music hits with images from the depths of the universe.
