What is the structure of the programme?

The Bachelor's degree programme in Nursing combines a professional qualification as a nursing specialist with a first academic degree (Bachelor of Science).

Teaching and study are intended to provide students with knowledge, skills and methods in such a way that they can independently and scientifically practise nursing care for people of all ages. This includes in particular:

  • the competences of scientific work, critical thinking and independent action based on ethical standards;
  • the examination of the development of theories and models of nursing and its related sciences as well as their significance for all fields of nursing activity;
  • development and implementation of evidence-based nursing concepts;
  • the critical reflection of nursing activities;
  • the conception, planning, implementation and evaluation of own research projects;
  • the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions for the various fields of nursing activity and in the context of health promotion;
  • to actively participate in the process of professionalising nursing.

The Bachelor's degree programme is a primary qualification programme, i.e. theoretical and practical qualification is provided by the university. In addition to the classical theoretical courses and practical training, the study programme also includes skills training and simulations in the SkillsLab. The programme comprises a total of eight semesters, has a modular structure and is divided into four thematic years of study with the following focus:

1st year of study: Orientation and physiological development in the phases of life

2nd year: Health promotion and prevention in the phases of life

3rd year of study: crises and existential situations in development

4th year of study: professional and scientific role action

In the first year of study, basic knowledge and basic skills of nursing are taught. From the second year of study, the first practical module is completed. A total of 23 compulsory modules, two elective modules and five practical modules must be completed for the degree programme; 30 ETCS are awarded per semester. The practical assignments take place at cooperating clinics, inpatient nursing homes and outpatient nursing services of the Department of Health and Nursing.

What are the entry requirements?

  • General higher education entrance qualification, subject-specific higher education entrance qualification or technical college entrance qualification
  • Did you complete your school or university education abroad? Please note the admission requirements for studying in Germany

You must sign a training contract with a cooperating institution of the University of Applied Sciences Jena. 

  • Applications must be submitted to the relevant institution, observing the application deadlines and the application documents to be submitted.
  • You must submit an extended certificate of good conduct and a medical certificate of fitness for work to the institution and to University of Applied Sciences Jena.

What career prospects do I have after completing my studies?

In terms of modern needs-oriented and integrated health care, the primary qualifying degree programme in nursing opens up attractive and future-proof work and career opportunities for nurses working in direct patient care, and this for all areas of the health care system of inpatient, day-care and outpatient care, in rehabilitation and spa clinics, nursing homes for the elderly, hospices and institutions for the disabled. But also jobs in various authorities such as health insurance companies, health offices and associations are possible. The Bachelor's degree programme in Nursing qualifies you for versatile tasks in the following dynamically developing professional fields:

  • Nursing specialist: competent design of complex nursing, counselling and care situations for patients and relatives.
  • Health management: selection and application of health-promoting, preventive, palliative and rehabilitative measures (e.g. training, pain management, needs-oriented care)
  • Quality management: development of guidelines, standards; design and evaluation of nursing processes
  • Nursing expert
  • Care management: discharge management, disease management, case management
  • Nursing research

Your career opportunities

Your tasks:

  • Assignment as a nursing specialist in one of our departments for: Intensive and anaesthesia care, trauma surgery,neurocentre, spinal cord injury or geriatric traumatology.
  • Supporting the nursing team in the assurance and further development of quality-promoting measures (after the induction phase), in accordance with your nursing science training
  • Direct cooperation and collaboration with our staff member in the "Nursing Science Staff Office".

Your tasks:

  • Basic and treatment care
  • Participation in the scientific further development of nursing care concepts or the establishment of a new area (inpatient neurological rehabilitation)
  • Taking responsibility for holistic, process-oriented patient care
  • Target-oriented cooperation with all professional groups involved in the nursing process
  • Organisation of work processes taking into account economic aspects
  • Compliance with the applicable hygiene regulations
  • Assumption of inter-professional tasks

  • Professional nursing care within the framework of the nursing process 
  • Patient and family education and counselling 
  • Cooperation in the interdisciplinary team  
  • Establishment and development of evidence-based care standards and care structures 

How does the application process work?

Application period 15.05. to 15.07.
1. Sign a training contract

Before enrolling, you must sign a training contract with a cooperating institution of the University of Applied Sciences Jena. Applications must be submitted to the institution in accordance with the application deadlines and the required application documents.

2. Registration with Hochschulstart

First, register at www.hochschulstart.de. There you will receive a BID (applicant identification number) and a BAN (applicant authentication number).

3. Register on the Campusportal

Register with your BID and BAN on our application portal.
Important: Only register once, even if you wish to apply for several degree programmes.

4. Add and submit your application

Select your desired degree programme and enter all the necessary information in the application portal. Upload the required documents and submit your application by the deadline of 15 July at midnight.
If you are applying for several degree programmes, prioritise your applications on hochschulstart.de, as this is decisive for admission.

5. Allocation procedure

We carry out the allocation procedure based on the information you provide and send the rankings to Hochschulstart. If you have achieved a high ranking, you will receive an offer of admission. If you have submitted multiple applications, you may receive multiple offers. You decide via Hochschulstart whether to accept an offer. The letter of admission will tell you the deadline for submitting the necessary documents. 

6. Apply for enrolment electronically

After receiving an offer of admission, you decide whether to accept the place. Acceptance is done via Hochschulstart. The letter of admission will tell you the deadline for submitting the necessary documents. Apply for online enrolment on the Campusportal by entering all the required data. You will then find your enrolment application there as a PDF file.

7. Send your enrolment application by post

Print out the enrolment application, sign it and send it to us by post in good time, together with all the required documents (see letter of admission).

8. Done – welcome to our university!

As soon as we have received and checked your documents, you will be enrolled and will receive a starter pack with your THOSKA by post from the Student Registrar's Office.
