Due to increasing life expectancy, growing health awareness and technical innovations, medical technology is one of Germany's key technologies. As an application of engineering sciences in the field of medicine, it has become indispensable in many medical areas: For example, it plays a role in diagnosis in the derivation of biosignals (e.g. ECG), in imaging procedures (e.g. X-ray or ultrasound examinations) and in the determination of lung parameters or blood tests. It is also used in therapy, for example in pacemakers, artificial kidneys and ventilators. In the digital age, both the processing of patient data and signal analysis and image processing using various software are essential. Medical technicians are involved in the development, operation and maintenance of a wide variety of devices and systems.

What makes this degree programme special?

  • Medical technology engineering studies in Jena since 1976
  • Tradition and progress proven 1000 times in practice
  • Practice-oriented engineering competence at the medical technology-patient interface

What is the structure of the programme?

In principle, practical application is in the foreground during the six semesters of the Bachelor's programme. However, this does not mean that theoretical basics can be dispensed with. These are taught in the first semesters of the programme. This includes, for example, modules in the basic sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.
In the following semesters, you will specialise in medical technology subjects. By selecting various elective modules in the 5th semester, you can deepen your knowledge in subjects that match your interests and preferred future fields of work.
In the 6th semester, a practical module follows, which is carried out in a company or in a university-internal/external research institution. Here you work on an engineering task from professional practice under supervision. Finally, you deal with a corresponding topic as part of your Bachelor's thesis.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), subject-related higher education entrance qualification or entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife)
  • You don't have a higher education entrance qualification but you have work experience? Find out about studying without High School Diploma.
  • Did you complete your school or university education abroad? Please note the admission requirements for studying in Germany.

What career prospects do I have after completing my studies?

The medical and health industry is one of the largest economic sectors and therefore also opens up a wide range of employment opportunities. Medical technology products from Germany are in demand all over the world.

As a graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme, you can perform the following tasks, especially in hospitals, clinics and companies:

  • Clinical use of medical physics and technology
  • Development, sales, service and maintenance of medical technology products, devices and equipment
  • Assumption of special medical-technical application tasks
  • Quality management and certification
  • Participation in testing, monitoring and standardisation committees

Your Bachelor's degree qualifies you for a career in the civil service.
After graduating with a Bachelor's degree, you have the option of studying for an advanced Master's degree. The Department of Medical Engineering and Biotechnology offers a consecutive Master's programme in Medical Engineering.

Your career opportunities

Your tasks:

  • Technical advice and support in the development / optimisation of packaging to ensure rational workflows.
  • Creation and maintenance of technical packaging data for procurement, production and quality control (packaging specifications, packaging scheme)
  • Initiation and implementation of packaging changes to reduce costs and complexity in cooperation with Product Development, Product Management, Purchasing, Production and Marketing
  • Carrying out packaging suitability tests in coordination with external laboratories
  • Participation in the implementation of validations, taking into account the relevant regulations
  • Ensuring compliance with laws, guidelines and quality agreements
  • Creation of label layouts taking into account the industrial standards and in coordination with the departments responsible for the product

Your tasks:

  •  Checking the requirements, specifications and other documents for testability.
  • Ensuring quality by creating test concepts for the verification of simple to complex components of the system during the development phases
  • Defining the test strategy and choosing suitable test methodologies
  • Responsible for the creation of the test plan and its professional and timely implementation
  • Introduction of suitable metrics for evaluating test progress
  • Deviation management in test projects, including documentation of results
  • Conducting lessons-learned workshops with the aim of improving the test process

Your tasks:

  • Product development and detailed design of implants/implant systems
  • Design and calculation of implants and instruments
  • Creation and maintenance of development documentation
  • Project planning and support from the product idea to the start of production, process organisation
  • Independent implementation of the above tasks with the support of the development team
  • Communication with external partners who may be manufacturers of products or partial components of products, or who may be clinical partners or end users and customers.

How does the application process work?

Application period 15.05. to 30.09.
1. Registration

Register on the Campusportal.
Important: Only register once, even if you wish to apply for several degree programmes. If you apply for a degree programme with open admission, your place is guaranteed. You can therefore only apply for and enrol in one degree programme with open admission.

2. Add and submit application form

Select your desired degree and course of study and enter all the necessary information in the campus portal. If necessary, upload the requested supporting documents.
Once you have submitted your application electronically, you will be automatically redirected to the online enrolment page. If you obtained your school/university degree outside Germany or have already studied in Germany, we will review your application before you can apply for enrolment.

3. Apply for enrolment

Then apply for online enrolment in the Campusportal by entering all the necessary data. You will then find your enrolment application as a PDF file on the campus portal.

4. Send the enrolment application

Print out the enrolment application form, sign it and send it by post, together with all the required documents, to the address on the form.

5. Done – Welcome to our university!

Once we have received and checked your documents, you will be enrolled and will receive a starter pack with your THOSKA card by post from the Student Registrar's Office.
