Part-time study

What is a part-time degree program?

Part-time study refers to a program in which students complete half of the coursework requirements specified in the SGSBs each semester. You participate in regular classes, which means there is no separate schedule for part-time study.

Compared to full-time study, you have an extended standard period of study during which you can complete your coursework. Part-time study is a particularly suitable option if you wish to study while working.

What are the reasons I can apply to study part-time?

Part-time study is an option for anyone who wishes to pursue their studies while working or fulfilling caregiving responsibilities, such as caring for children or the sick. Part-time study is not available for every program—you can check the program’s SGSB to see if it offers part-time study.

You can only apply for part-time study for specific reasons (§ 24 ImmaO of the University of Applied Sciences Jena).

Reasons for part-time study include:

  • Employment (at least 20 hours per week)
  • Raising a child or caring for close relatives
  • Outstanding social and civic engagement
  • Participation in student and academic self-governing bodies
  • Disability or chronic illness

How do I apply to study part-time?

Applications for part-time study may be submitted each semester for two consecutive semesters, provided the required documentation is submitted by the end of the re-registration period at the latest; for the first semester, the application must be submitted by the end of the enrollment period. The application must be submitted to the Student Affairs Office. Repeat applications are permitted. Admission to part-time study is subject to approval by the respective department.
