Mechatronics (B.Eng.)

1. registration

2. add application form and enter data electronically (upload supporting documents if necessary)

4. apply for enrollment electronically

5. send the enrollment application including documents by mail to the University of Applied Sciences Jena

Aims of the preliminary internship

The pre-study internship serves to impart basic knowledge of the processing and machining of the most important components and materials of mechanical engineering/mechatronics. In addition, insights into technical and organisational correlations of production processes and sociological aspects of a company are to be gained.

Duration of the preliminary internship

The duration of the pre-study internship is at least 10 weeks with at least 35 hours per week. School hours, holidays, illness and other absences do not count as internships. In justified cases, a missing pre-study internship can be made up in lecture-free periods up to and including the 3rd semester. It is permissible to divide the pre-study internship into parts, but none of the parts should be less than three weeks long.

Contents of the pre-study internship (examples)

  • Familiarisation with and application of essential basic skills in metalworking (marking out, sawing, filing, drilling, thread cutting, ...) as well as simple measuring and testing equipment (caliper gauge, outside micrometer, vernier calliper, ...)
  • Reading drawings
  • Practical familiarisation with typical manufacturing processes in the metalworking and electrical industries (e.g. metal-cutting manufacturing processes, printed circuit board production, primary and forming processes, joining and assembly technology, assembly and connection technology).
  • Practical familiarisation with typical components and systems of mechanical engineering as well as mecanics and electrical engineering.

The practical training can take place in various areas such as

  • Production, assembly
  • Research and development
  • Service (repair, maintenance)
  • Measuring and testing laboratories

Proof of the preliminary internship

The company providing the internship shall issue proof of the internship completed. This must contain the period (or periods) as well as the essential contents and activities of the internship. The decisive factor for recognition is solely the activities related to the degree programme, but not the type of company or institution. With regard to the suitability of a potential practical placement, a preliminary examination by the Internship Office is possible.

Acceptance of vocational training as a pre-study internship

Completed vocational training in a relevant apprenticeship occupation can be recognised as a pre-study internship. This includes professions in the metalworking industry and related industries.

You can check whether your school-leaving certificate gives you direct access to German universities or whether you need to complete additional work, e.g. in the form of years of study in your home country or attendance at a Studienkolleg in Germany. The database of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will help you step by step. After a few clicks you will know whether you have direct access or not. Did you not find your country? Then please search the database anabin.

You want to apply as an international applicant without a German university entrance qualification for a bachelor program at University of Applied Sciences Jena? Then please apply online via the application portal of the University of Applied Sciences Jena (selection: Studienkolleg/Sprachvorbereitung). Your application will be reviewed by us for a fee. You can find an overview of the application fees here.

Important information

If you already have experience in a field of study and would like to enter a higher semester, this is generally possible at University of Applied Sciences Jena. However, there are a few special points to note when applying, and our contact persons for entry into higher semesters will be happy to help you with these.
