Applied materials science
Bachelor programme
In this exciting specialism, you will learn how to develop innovative materials and improve existing materials. You will immerse yourself in the world of atoms and discover how their arrangement influences the properties of materials. But you won't stop at the atomic level. You will go further and cross boundaries: Boundaries between scales(from atoms to components), boundaries between disciplines (from chemistry and physics to mechanical engineering) and possibly even your own.
Still unclear? Here is an explanatory video of one of our students.
Studying with us is characterised by a high degree of practical orientation. The study groups are small and you have direct contact with the lecturers at all times.
Materials science and materials engineering play a key role in almost all areas of our lives:
- Smartphones with scratch-resistant displays and long-lasting batteries
- Lightweight construction materials for cars & aeroplanes
- Biocompatible implants in medicine
- High-performance materials for space travel
- Faster, higher, further: innovative materials for sports (fast snowboards, extra-light bicycles)
All this and much more is only made possible by the findings of this specialised field!
The degree programme provides the essential foundations for a successful career as a materials engineer.
- Scientific and technical fundamentals (physics, chemistry, electrical engineering)
- Structure and properties of different material classes (metals, ceramics, glasses, plastics)
- Modern analysis and manufacturing methods
- Computer-aided material development and simulation
- Practicals in modern laboratories
The versatility of the degree programme and the demand for specialists in this field open up numerous opportunities for a successful career. With a successful degree, many doors are open to you:
- Research and development in industry
- Quality assurance and failure analysis
- Materials testing and characterisation
- Production management and project management
- Product development and technical sales
- Founding start-ups with innovative material ideas
- TÜV and material testing institutes
- And of course you can continue your studies with us on the Applied Materials Science Master's programme.
Would you like to know what former graduates are doing now? We asked ... some of the answers are here.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with us.
We are here for you and offer
- Personal advice from the programme advisor
