Application for winter semester 15.05. To 30.09.

With the degree programme in Midwifery, the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena is following German and European efforts to open up midwifery fields of work at the academic level and to develop scientifically based expertise in accordance with current concepts of university didactics.

The primary qualifying and dual full-time study programme "Midwifery" consists of a university-based and a practical part. The study programme prepares you comprehensively and scientifically for the complex requirements in the care and support of women and their families in the reproductive phase of life, from physiology to regulation/pathology. The theoretical and practical teaching-learning events take place two-dimensionally at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena. Theoretically acquired knowledge is trained realistically in simulation scenarios in the newly established skills lab in order to optimally introduce the practical part of the study. The practical part of the study as the third learning dimension takes place with cooperating practice partners (responsible practice institution/vPE) in the clinical environment and is expanded to include cooperation partners (birth centres, midwife practices, midwives) in the non-clinical care environment.

In the winter semester 2022/2023, prospective students first apply to our cooperation clinics to conclude an academic training contract and are then enrolled in the study programme.

That makes the study programme special:

  • The Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena has already established the model course "Obstetrics/Midwifery" (enrolment no longer possible) since 2014. This makes the university one of the few in Germany that already has several years of experience in academic midwifery education.
  • Within the theoretical courses, interdisciplinary modules take place to promote inter-professional communication and teamwork with students of other health professions and human medicine, which includes training in the skills lab.
  • The students complete the practical phases in a clinic cooperating with the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena. A rotation principle and the externship enable the students to get to know a broad spectrum of different care levels, care models and care environments and thus to gain comprehensive qualifications.
  • The elective modules offered in the 7th semester serve to set content-related focal points with a focus on personal interests and development.
